crown shyness

This is a phenomenon known as “crown shyness”: the reluctance of certain tree species to touch their neighbors creates distinct gaps in the upper canopy of the forest. Image captured in a myrtle forest near the summit of Mount Victoria in the northeast of Tasmania.
