Galloway Hoard

In a coup, Adelaide is the first stop on a world tour of the richest collection of Viking Age objects ever found in the United Kingdom. One of Europe’s most significant archaeological finds of the century, the collection was buried in AD900. It was unearthed in 2014 using metal detectors in a field in Scotland.

Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard is on loan from National Museums Scotland. It is being showcased at the South Australian Museum in 2025, from February 7 to late July. “The Galloway Hoard is a rich collection in every sense, from rare and unique examples of gold and silverwork that show the artistry of the period to items of hacked bullion that show the intensity of trade and exchange,” SA Museum chief executive officer Dr David Gaimster said. The museum has also discovered two Viking Age pieces in its own collection, brooches from the Swedish island Gotland, which will be displayed for the first time during the exhibition’s run.
